A long time ago, Springsteen used to encourage it. But not so much now....

patti smith allows it. i think she likes to receive a copy.

ryan adams used to let people plug into his soundboard but i don't think he's doing that anymore.

Billy Bragg used to. I was at a gig at the Town & Country Club when he took a video camera out of someone's hand and filmed the audience and the band members before handing the camera back. That must have been 25 years ago.

Obviously the Grateful Dead...only good thing about them... I heard an interview segment from the late 1960s/early 1970s of Mick Jagger where he was asked on his opinion on bootlegs. He said he had no problem, as long as fans weren't being charged an arm and a leg for a crap recording. Not sure where he stands on them now...

A lot of the bigger bands now can offer relatively cheap digital downloads of concerts that make any bootlegs worthless

And thats the thing 'offer relatively cheap', you can get top quality concerts on bootleg for free, so why would people still pay? I paid to see KISS and yet they wanted to charge for a digital copy of the thing I had paid to see! I found it online a few hours later and saved myself a few quid.
Official stuff I dont mind paying for, these things have had time and effort put into them, a quick download off the soundboard has no effort involved and is just a quick easy few more £'s off the fans.

You can get top quality bootlegs but not guaranteed. I suppose the thing is for those bands that do it, it has killed off the cd bootlegs that you have to pay for, although this has largely been superseded by just digital files. The thing that always got me was that by buying a ticket to a concert you had agreed to being filmed and recorded as part of the audience for any potential live release, but only had the right to listen to the concert "live".
